What is Suitable Guest Attire at an Upscale, Evening Wedding?
Q. My first cousin is getting married. The wedding reception
is at an upscale hotel/conference center at night. They have not specified
required attire on the invitation. My mom would like to wear a flowy,
almost floor length skirt that is mostly white with embroidered black
flower outlines on it and a few black sequins on the flowers. She is planning
on a black button up sheer long sleeved top with a black shell underneath.
Do you feel that this outfit is appropriate?
A. For an evening wedding reception at an upscale hotel,
a long skirt and coordinated top are appropriate attire.
Although it is less common today than in the past, some brides take exception
to their guests wearing white, although it doesn't sound like your mother's
ensemble would appear dominantly white. But to be on the safe side, you
could help you mom out by getting in touch with your cousin and asking
her if the skirt is okay by her - or get word through the family grapevine.
